Any New 3DS XL owners considering switching to the smaller New 3DS?

This one is tough. I love my 3DS XL. I stood in line outside Target in -20 degree temperatures with my cousin for TWO hours as we missed the online pre-orders for the MM edition. So there is definitely some added value there.

On the other hand... The pros of the regular 3DS are enticing. More comfortable to hold, cover plates, and having a sharper image. I could probably trade off my XL for a regular version along with extras.

Anyone in the same boat?

I went from the XL to the small version... and right back 5 minutes later.

I thought the small one was more uncomfortable to play than the XL. The lighter weight is nice, but it was causing my hands to cramp right away. The cover plates are nice and the screen seems to be a little crisper, but the screens are so small when coming from the XL!

That's the exact reason I went from original 3ds to 3ds xl. Getting n3ds xl was a no-brainer as not much changed design side.

Yeah, the smaller size was more difficult to hold. If I'm recalling correctly, I think the 2DS is actually easy to hold.

Cramping hands isn't enough to form a first impression?

He should play through it right? Keep at it, get massages, work through it...

No pain, no gain, right?

LOL I tried it again the other day and my experience was the same. It's currently listed on eBay... We'll see if I can get my money back!

Isn't enough, I've a NN3DSXL and playing Mario Kart, SSB or even Shovel Knight after a while gives me hand cramps, the difference is that I can't get a regular size lol.

But I'm pretty sure it'd be the same.

Nope, not at all. Cover plates don't mean anything to me, more comfortable to hold doesn't matter as neither is comfortable to hold, that is why I buy a grip. The "sharper image" is not a big enough difference to affect me. The resolution is still incredibly low.

So, no, sorry. I do not agree with you. :)

Ok :)

Which grip do you have if you don't mind sharing?

level 3

One I don't recommend because the tiny piece of plastic that "holds" the 3DS in place, breaks off easily.

I'd recommend this one

It's def a bit pricey but ultimately worth it.

I've been looking at that one but the price seemed high. I'll have to see if I can find a screen of it in use.

Is it that plastic that has like a soft feel to it? Might have to grab one of these. Thanks!

level 5

It's probably plastic but it's got a nice rubber feel

Thanks! I have a grip for the vita that is probably the same, just wondering because smooth surfaces suck for grip for me, the softish rubbery style ones feel best.

Owned a black N3DSXL and sold it when I got a MM N3DSXL. I recently purchased the AC:HHD N3DS bundle and immediately transferred everything over to the standard sized N3DS. The smaller unit/screen took a little getting used to but the added portability was great. I played on the smaller N3DS for about a month. Last week I switched back to the XL model just to see how it feels to go back. After using both sized models over time, heres what I conclude:

  • My XL model has an IPS screen so the colors look more vivid

  • My XL model's build quality is not as good as my standard sized N3DS. (Top screen is slightly wobbly on the XL)

  • My XL model seems to be more sensitive to picking up street passes than my standard sized.

  • I love the swappable faceplates for the standard sized, even though I can't really get my hands on the faceplates I want.

  • I prefer the satisfying "click" of the XL when it opens/closes

The Pokemon 20th anniversary system tempted me quite a bit. But I decided to skip. Portability isn't an issue, regardless of standard VS XL I would still have to carry it in my bag VS pants. And I value the bigger screen quite a bit. Cover plates are pretty cool but realistically I'm too cheap to import a bunch of them at a premium cost.

I switched a few months ago. I found the XL comfortable to hold, but the smaller n3DS was very comfortable due to it's lighter weight. It's portability, higher pixel density and those sweet snes buttons are all bonuses.

I still have my XL and use it occasionally. I really wish Nintendo would let you sync your games, saves and the activity log between multiple systems.

I have no fucking idea how Nintendo can be so stone age when it comes to the account stuff

This. A concern that always comes up for me when a new special edition comes out is just how restrictive Nintendo's account system is.

I recently sold my New XL and bought a HHD bundle for $180. The console is lighter, has better resolution, and snappier buttons. I have rather large hands and it's way more comfortable. I've already purchased KK Slider, FE Fates, and Hanafuda plates.

level 2

Better pixel density, not resolution, which is the same on all 3DS machines

level 3

True. 240p never looked better. I was never a fan of the XLs size anyways.

True. 240p never looked better.

I cant tell if you are joking or not...

Sort of both. I think it's actually 480p right? The smaller display definitely makes all of the games look better, especially MHU4. The selection screen on Smash took some getting used to (but that's a mess anyways). Overall I prefer it and am really enjoying playing for longer sessions.

level 6

I feel like its not so much that it makes the game look better, it just looks better while holding it closer to your face. People can argue about PPI until they are blue in the face, but its the same resolution and its pretty ridiculous how so many act like the smaller screen is like an HD upgrade. Im not saying this is you, just in general whenever the XL vs Normal debate comes up and people bring up the "better screen" I cant help but feel like it misinforms people seeking information about which device is best for them. In many cases (not that it really matters) I feel like lots of people are just trying to justify the model they have as being better than the other, and saying the screen is "better" in anyway is misinformation. This isnt really directed towards you, or anyone in particular, I just think its silly how people make one device (obviously the one they own) to be superior when it simply isnt the case. And again, if resolutions, graphics, and screen quality are important to someone, a 3ds is going to be awfully low on the scale regardless of what model one chooses.
