About the cast of RWBY...

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to say how glad I am about the originality of characters in this animated show, it is crystal clear all of them are loved by their creators so much and I can actually feel it while watching RWBY. Now don't get me wrong, all of them are underdeveloped as of now but we have to give them a break. With a limited budget, there hasn't been much time for character development and yet they are doing a better job every episode.

There is also another point I would like to make, which is gender representation. The four leads are all female, they are all kickass and to be honest I was a little scared at start because there are a lot of shows who tries to have strong women in them but mess up the male characters in the process. They are either all just mentors who is never seen after a few episodes or villains. And I know that it is not easy to balance out the genders, I have my fair share of friends who works in the industry. It just amazes me how they managed to make characters of both genders who are absolutely loveable. Again, this speaks for how much effort was put into the cast, we don't see them as male or female, they are all people just like in real life. Their genders don't even matter for many of us and I am so proud to be watching a show like this with an amazing community like you guys.

Just wanted to share the thoughts I had for a long time, thank you for reading.

I agree. I'm also glad Monty chose to avoid fanservice almost entirely. I think RT's big advantage is being outside the normal distribution system. They can do whatever they want, and not worry about the networks/ distributors insisting on forcing it to please a certain audience.

Pretty sure his idea of fanservice was food fights and group choreographed dancing.

Those were lighter days.

And it worked, too. That food fight was boss.

Yup. If I remember right, WB Japan tried doing this, asking them to make a beach episode or something like that for the Japanese release, and RT refused. The show is in good hands.

wait really?!? thats awesome!

Don't quote me on that though. I'm having trouble remembering where I heard that in the first place. Might've been one of the things mentioned in the AURTX RWBY panel that went unrecorded.

EDIT: Yup, it was supposedly brought up at the AURTX RWBY panel. Of course, since I don't think that there is a recording, we have no way of confirming it.

I mean, I wouldn't be opposed to a beach episode...

Yeah. It would be a nice addition ((being a lewd lover I am), but with the way things are going now and how complex RWBY's actual plot is, I don't see where a beach episode would remotely fit in.

Plus as u/gh3ttoduCanada said, the fanservice came in the form of unusual scenes like the food fight (and surprisingly still has connection to the plot considering Glynda's and Ozpin's exchange after the fight), and yeah, it worked. Better than the most typical Anime fanservice IMO.

If you happen to be a sponsor and can watch RT'S anime podcast, you'll find that none of the writers are fans of fanservice. Thank God.

level 3

Well the sexual kind anyway

I've only ever known fanservice to be sexual. What are the other kinds?

level 5

Like when you throw in something just because you know the fandom wants to see it or think it's cute rather than any real plot reason.

Oh, so meaningless drabble type stuff. I think I get it.

Good fanservice: Throwbacks, such as older characters from prequels appearing in the background or in epilogues, such as Unlimited Blade Works epilogue episode Community gags, like the ship combo attack names, are also good fanservice.

Bad fanservice: Blatant sexualization for absolutely no apparant reason, such as upskirts, or bath scenes.

That makes sense. I have never before considered the word "fanservice" to be of positive connotation.

... On the note of the UBW epilogue, I can't get over the fact that Rin's arm reaches all the way across that damn table...

Literal "service to fans".

level 5

I consider some of the fight scenes (such as in Players and the Pieces) to be fanservice

So like... referring to in-jokes and stuff of the like?

level 7

not really.

Sexual fanservice = "hey look! boobs!"

Action fanservice = "hey look! crazy-awesome fight scenes!"

fanservice can be anything intended to blatantly appeal to fans.

level 2

RWBY has plenty of fanservice, I mean, did you see episode 11?

level 3

I can't tell if you're joking or not. There's no panty shots, "accidental" breast squeezes, touchy tentacle monsters, or dresses which shred the second combat starts (Freezing and Ikki Tousen come to mind). What fanservice are you seeing in episode 11?

level 4

I was being a bit tongue in cheek, but I meant the broader definition of 'fanservice' in that we saw like a trillion things we've been super hyped for last episode.

level 5

Oh, ok. I'm fine with them giving us fans what we want, just not "giving the fans what they want" if you know what I mean.

level 6

Yeah, I get what you mean, that kinda stuff can be ridiculous. However fanservice goes beyond the pervy shit and it can be awesome.
