Idk, I guess because I went into this with really no expectations I ended up kind of enjoying it. Ultimately it feels like a totally pointless movie, and I didn't really get anything out of it, but I was entertained for some reason.

level 1

After watching Nightcrawler, I thought I would watch every film Dan Gilroy directs. I changed my mind after watching this film.

This movie feels like a tv movie from the early 90s. While there are not a lot of obvious flaws, it's just dull, unimaginable and cliched. I was super disappointed.

level 1

Watched it the other night and was hoping it would be ranked as well as Nightcrawler. It was 'meh'. I found it easier to watch as a comedy honestly, especially with Gretchens death with the sphere. The reason someone mentioned was a 'malfuction with the piece'. What? Plus, poor Coco finding all of her employers dead. It was great in its own way.

Either way, not that good of a movie unless you are drunk or something. I was drunk partially through the movie with people and it made it watchable.

level 1

Movie would’ve been a lot better if more of the deaths concluded like the graffiti wall one. I think it would’ve been way cooler for everyone to somehow die and become a piece of the art, much how we can assume that the artist (or perhaps his father?) ended up apart of the paintings. Would’ve been a way cooler reveal for one of the characters to finally take notice when a disappeared person was in once of the pieces.

level 2

100% agree. Like when the guy got pulled into the painting by the wolves, I was hoping the camera would pan out to show him IN the painting being attacked by wolves.

level 3

by wolves do you mean monkeys?

Wow the 2nd half of this movie was funny as fuck because of how nonsensical and batshit crazy everything becomes has if its a fucked up version of night at the museum, I mean that scene where Toni Collete's corspe is seen has just a piece of the metal sculpture was one of the most unintentional funniest things I have ever witnessed in a movie in a while. It's also alot of fun to see these pretentious pricks suffering for my amusemt.

level 2

Idk was it really unintentional? The movie was not marketed as such but for sure it is a dark comedy

I really like horror movies, but I think they should have leave out the cursed painting stuff and just go with the art world satire. those scenes were really enjoyable. the horror part... I don‘t know. felt a bit cheap. but I was entertained. 6/10.

I agree. The horror scenes weren't just cheap - they were very lazily written and executed.

level 1

Just watched this last night. I though it wasn't great, but still a reasonably entertaining film. On paper, you've got a great cast and a great concept but they fudged up the execution. I liked the visuals and the quirky, satirical nature of the film. Once the first couple of deaths occur, then the movie really starts to get going. The pacing was pretty off in this movie and the script was pretty mediocre and the 'thriller elements' felt pretty cheap as did some of the effects. Also, disappointed we didn't get to see John Malkovich play a bigger role.

level 1

While it’s true the movie has indeed quite a few issues, I do not understand exactly some of the criticism that the “horror” elements were laughable and the movie turns out ridiculous and campy. I mean, yes. That’s for sure. Because it’s clearly a satirical comedy, that’s the point. Obviously that alone doesn’t make it necessarily good but, to me, it seems that there’s a misunderstanding about what the movie actually is.

My biggest issue with the horror elements was that they seemed to come out of nowhere. It's a full 45 minutes into the movie until it decides to go off the rails and turn into a full-on supernatural horror movie. Up until that point, it was pretty grounded and realistic. So the complete lack of setup and warning before shifting into a different tone and genre was jarring.

I know I'm late to the party, but I finally got around to watching it. I tend to be pretty easy to please, and I wouldn't say I disliked this necessarily, but.... it's just weird. It feels kind of cheap sometimes, and none of the characters really felt all that deep, and the whole structure of this movie just didn't really feel all there for me. We find out pretty early on what is happening and why, then we just kind of wait and watch characters get killed off. I kept expecting some kind of good rising action and payoff, but stuff just kind of happened. I'll watch it again soon with some friends and see if my opinion changes.

I just watched this movie randomly, knowing nothing about it. Started out thinking it was a quirky, farcical comedy... then it slowly turned into a b-movie.

This is the weird shit I'm here for. I thought it was really fun. Loved the visuals.

This made me think "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" kind of movie. Not awful but not amazing. Worth a watch, for sure.

Got to see Jake Gyllenhaal's ass, 7/10.

Honestly, I liked this a LOT more than I expected. It's a fun takedown of the commercial art world and I enjoyed that a lot.

level 1

cool concept, bad execution. Felt like a student film at times. I really liked the universe and characters but they needed a better adventure

If you watch this high, it's awesome.

Completely sober? Kinda meh.

level 2

I watched it high, it was kinda meh
