2019 Survivor Fallen Angel Profiles: Ghost Island

Welcome to the 2019 Survivor Fallen Angel Profile series!

In these threads, we encourage in-depth discussion about the "fallen angels" throughout Survivor history, counting down from the most recent to the original. In this context, a fallen angel is the last player eliminated prior to Final Tribal Council.

What allowed these players to make it to the end game? What are the reasons they fell short? Were they legit threats or coattail riders? How close were they to winning? Who would they have won or lost against had they made it to Final Tribal Council? How was their gameplay, narrative, story, edit, competition, and former or later seasons (if applicable)? What's their Survivor legacy? Are they overrated or underrated as a player and a character? Will they ever return?

These threads are meant for in-depth discussion, not low-effort content. We encourage people to post their detailed thoughts after reflecting on these fallen angels and their paths through the game.

Today's topic: Survivor: Ghost Island fallen angel Angela Perkins.

  • Method of Elimination: Lost F4 Firemaking Challenge

  • Individual Immunities won: 1/9

  • Tribal Councils Attended: 11/16

  • Votes Against: 3

  • Correct Votes: 4/9

Angela is my least favorite Ghost Island contestant, and it isn’t close.

When people talk about the players that “ruined” the season by making it an uninteresting pagonging/steamrolling for little to no personal gain, the names that come up most are Laurel and Kellyn. But Laurel was one of the few Malolos who actually managed to form a cross-tribal alliance, and her mistake at the end was overestimating her social game, a problem most FTC losers have. Before then, she was actually positioned well, fully avoiding the targets of the Malolo pagonging.

Kellyn, on the other hand, pushed “Naviti strong” to stay on top of the totem pole. Did it make it uninteresting for a while? Yes. But she actually benefited from it, and her mistake was simply waiting too long to make her move on Dom and Wendell. If she had gotten her timing right, it would have been a very different season and she likely could have come out on top.

But ANGELA. Hoo, boy, Angela. She took “Naviti strong” to heart, and was always a loyal foot soldier to Dom and Wendell, even though they tried to vote her out in episode 3. Right after the swap, she had the opportunity to shake the game up and vote with the Malolos who saved her, but she declined. She set the tone for the rest of the pre-and-post merge by refusing to even consider voting against her own starting tribe. And in the finale, she blew up the one final attempt to turn against Dom and Wendell, and basically gave the two of them a free pass to the F3.

Never once during any of this did she benefit personally, and she wasn’t even all that interesting to watch on TV. Dom and Wendell kept her around as a number, but she knew that they’d be willing to dump her anytime, and she stuck with them anyway. People talk about why Ghost Island was so uninteresting, and I think Angela deserves a hefty amount of that blame.

This. Absolutely this.

Laurel and Kellyn copped heat for sticking with Wendell and Dom, but they had good reason to think that it was their best option - the numbers were never there for them to successfully flip the power structure, or to survive the following rounds afterwards.

Some of the other players (Sebastian for instance) were frustrating because they didn't know better. Or because they tried but couldn't succeed. Yet Angela did know better, knew who was trying to shake things up, and nonetheless chose to maintain the status quo. She could have flipped post-swap, she could have flipped soon after the merge, and she could have flipped in the endgame/finale. She could have, at any point, hinted to the outsiders that she might consider a change. The numbers were almost always there to support her but she rebuffed their every offer, further burying not only her path to the FTC but also her chance to win a jury vote.

On every single level it was incredibly frustrating to watch, and I lay most of the blame at her feet because of the domino effect created by her shutting down every potential move. Unlike most of the fallen angels in this series, she fully deserved to go out when and as she did, without even making a lasting spark. It would have been gratifying to watch had it not also been so deeply disappointing.

but she rebuffed their every offer

Not an Angela defender, but she tried to turn on Wendom at F8 and got cockblocked by Laurel when Chelsea went home. The "she never attempted to turn on them" narrative is not entirely accurate.

You're not wrong about the rest.

Apologies for the generalisation, I haven't found a reason to rewatch yet. The approach to Laurel was doomed, though, as much due to the mistrust Angela had built up previously as Laurel's reticence.

If anything, trying to start up one coup attempt just feeds the more frustrating narrative of Angela knowing she needed to make a move, but then refusing again later on.

You just made me want to watch it again. Angela has all these issues going on, besides the show itself. Divorced, ex-military, not sure whats next in her life, had to spend time away from daughter during deployments, gets spot on show.... outlasts younger players, fits in nicely, is betrayed by her own "family" but then incredibly forgives them, has a natural draw towards working and joking around with males, maybe expects to be rewarded for her loyalty by being taken to final 3. I find her ability to forgive Dom and Wendell mature and she has a good sense of humor and she just seems cool! She's a buddy to Chris, but also seems to blend with the team females. And I still remember groaning when she spoiled Sebastiens plans, because it wasn't in her best interest. She's one of our best examples to see the military mind. Loyal to the bitter end. But she is a complex character and I can feel her filling in parts of her missing "family" with a reality tv family...

To be honest, I blame Michael more than Angela for the James boot (which the others have since reported). Either way, it is crazy how she stuck with them, despite them (unnecessarily) targeting her in the third episode.

It still doesn't take away from the fact that she definitely a large component of the season becoming boring, while having the least benefit by staying with the Navitis. So many people blew it in that season. Either way, she is the furthest from being a fallen angel.

level 3

When the tribes swapped and Kellyn saw that she was one the same side as Angela she said something like "Mama!" to "Angela and gave her a hug. Kellyn was absolutely playing on Angela's maternal instincts and I don't think Angela was ever going to betray her on the swapped tribe.

level 2

Angela voted for Wendell in Final 8. The only opportunity to Kellyn and Laurel to change the game. However, Wendell did a well job a tribal before to Laurel lost interest to work with the girls.

True, she did vote with the “girls alliance” that Donathan and Laurel betrayed, but once it failed she just doubled down on sticking with Dom/Wendell.

level 4

She also wanted to be a part of Desiree's coup at f11 but lost her vote and the Malolos flopped. That's 2 times Angela tried to flip.

I don’t know if I’d count that because she didn’t actually get to go through with it. Remember, she originally was going to turn on them in the finale, but changed her mind to like “do the honorable thing” or something like that. She very well could have done the same there.

Very good explanation. Laurel and Kellyn did things that the other players and the fans weren't thrilled with, but that ultimately helped their game (or at least where the best options for their game). Angela did things that upset everyone AND were bad for her game. She just threw Dom&Wendell the win because of loyalty. This isn't a game of loyalty, it's a competition! Do something to win!

I think there’s a case to be made that Angela is the worst Survivor player to be a final juror. She was nowhere close to winning and unlike some other final jurors who were also not close it’s hard for me to even conceive of circumstances that could lead to her winning. She was not super well liked or respected by most fellow contestants and she was an expendable number who actively enabled better players who had previously tried to cut her. What season does she have a chance of winning and how? Which losing finalists does she beat that she could plausibly have got to the end against? I’m struggling to picture it. Other than a single strong bond with Chris it’s hard to say anything great about her game at all.

But this is coming from the incredibly biased lens of GI’s disastrous edit. Angela may have had strong suits we simply didn’t see. It doesn’t seem like it from exit interviews and the like though.

Is she worse than Christina?

Christina is on the shortlist as well lol

I think Christina is probably at least marginally better because Christina at least seemed to recognize her status and tried to act in ways to improve her position. She failed, partly due to her own inability and partly due to the fact that most of the rest of her own cast also sucked, but she saw the writing on the wall and did what she could to better herself in the game. Angela was completely blinded by tribal lines in a way few players are and acted well outside of her own best interest multiple times. If you ask me which player has won Survivor more often across the multiverse or has at least come closer, gun to my head it’s probably Christina.

Am I the only one who opened the picture and thought to themselves "who the hell is that".

That pretty much sums up Angela's game.

Her gameplay was insulting

Say what you want about her gameplay but Angela knew how to down a sea cucumber

One of my favorite things about watching GI live as someone who was spoiled was seeing the reactions of people who gave in and looked at spoilers. Every single person was straight up bewildered that ANGELA would end up being our final juror with her edit.

She is absolutely one of the biggest editing mishaps in recent memory and perhaps the biggest of GI (though every juror who finished in an even placing gives her a run for her money. GI was edited so badly lol.)

She could have had a very tragic story about someone who just needed a family, but I think the editors were scared that giving her a good edit would make fans angry about the fire twist. So they underedited her and gave us only a tiny fragment of what could have been a great character.

level 1

Underedited so bad. Angela could be a comic relief character at least. But no, GI edit sucked a lot

GI is my least favourite season I've seen, by far. I still haven't watched GC or Redemption Island or Worlds Apart (or is it One World? I haven't seen either) - but GI was horrible, I was so blue-balled by them always teasing "Is Laurel gonna flip?" EVERY EPISODE (and then she did nothing all season), AND it spoiled so many big moments of previous seasons that I had not yet seen!!! UGH.

It could be both worlds apart and one world

level 4

Worlds apart is a decent season.

level 5

I still very much disliked it, but yeah, there's no comparing it to GI, RI, OW or even SoPa.
