2019 Survivor Fallen Angel Profiles: Marquesas

Welcome to the 2019 Survivor Fallen Angel Profile series!

In these threads, we encourage in-depth discussion about the "fallen angels" throughout Survivor history, counting down from the most recent to the original. In this context, a fallen angel is the last player eliminated prior to Final Tribal Council.

What allowed these players to make it to the end game? What are the reasons they fell short? Were they legit threats or coattail riders? How close were they to winning? Who would they have won or lost against had they made it to Final Tribal Council? How was their gameplay, narrative, story, edit, competition, and former or later seasons (if applicable)? What's their Survivor legacy? Are they overrated or underrated as a player and a character? Will they ever return?

These threads are meant for in-depth discussion, not low-effort content. We encourage people to post their detailed thoughts after reflecting on these fallen angels and their paths through the game.

Today's topic: Survivor: Marquesas fallen angel Kathy Vavrick-O'Brien.

  • Method of Elimination: Voted out at F3

  • Individual Immunities won: 2/8

  • Tribal Councils Attended: 10/14

Kathy's first few days on Survivor were socially inept, but her tribe lost no immunity challenges so she wasn't voted out and ended up unintentionally swung into the strongest position out of anyone through most of the game.

The tribe swap gave Kathy (and her Maraamu group) a new lease of life, but she really came alive when she and Boston Rob met for the first time and instantly clicked. Kathy went on to win a crucial merge immunity and amusingly threw out a vote against her treacherous ex-friend Zoe.

Though Rob went at that same tribal council, he influenced Kathy enough to see her link together the disparate pairs of Vee/Sean and Paschal/Neleh, and was positioned as a swing vote for their final five rebel alliance.

Sadly that final five is where her game began to fall apart. When faced with a choice between the two pairs, Kathy didn't really have any good options. She sided with Paschal and Neleh, but the three couldn't vote out Vee when she won the final four immunity.

Cue the infamous purple rock drawing, and Kathy's 2 in 3 shot at survival. She had no good way of avoiding have to draw rocks, but luckily came out on top... unlike Paschal.

Kathy had every shot in the final immunity challenge, but ended up first out for fear of a wardrobe malfunction. Vee and Neleh made a deal (a smart but duplicitous move from Vee) and Kathy was voted out. Kathy would almost certainly have beat either of them at FTC.

Like almost everything about Marquesas, Kathy's success story arose from dozens of chances of circumstance. She showed herself capable in the challenges, and an ability to improve and adapt in the course of the game, and was open enough to take advantage of the opportunities that arose for her.

Rob C calls Kathy the best female player in the first four seasons of Survivor, and I'm inclined to agree. Marquesas is a great season, but her win would have elevated it considerably further.

Ugh, I love her so much. /u/DabuSurvivor can attest to this, but his love for Marquesas inspired to give the season a chance, and I was RIVETED due to Kathy, her amazing laugh, and her phenomenal journey. Cirie 1.0 may be famous for her journey arc, but Kathy did it first (and better tbh), and Kathy will forever be in my heart for instigating that historical flip.

My favorite fallen angel. She was so wonderful, and still to this day, has the best "growth arc" out of any character (although Cirie in Panama comes close). She starts off as being annoying to her tribemates, and ends up as being regarded by the jury as the person who "should have won" the season. Her flip, along with Neleh, Paschal, Sean, and Vecepia is probably the best flip of all time, and brought about the downfall of the Rotu Four. In the end, she lost the FIC and was voted out. I think everyone watching as it aired was rooting for Kathy at this point, and her losing was devastating. But her journey to that point was epic, and she really was the "star" of the season. 10/10 character, who is in my top 5 of all time.

However, I try to forget that she's in All-Stars lol.

I wish she won this season and I wish all stars didnt ruin her arc.

While I do wish she won this season, I didn't think all stars damaged her arc. Curious what your thoughts are.

Not OP, but I felt that KVOB's ark was damaged, if only because she went from a heroic figure to a detestable one. Not even a villain, just a frustrating person to watch. The only time I really sympathized for her on AS was when she gave the jury speech to Rob about how she felt like she got betrayed by her son. Her other behaviors (calling Jenna a "cancer to the tribe," her poor treatment of Sue post-incident, etc) were reprehensible.

That said, I really liked KVOB. If Vecepia hadn't won, I would've loved a KVOB victory.

Huh interesting, is that the general consensus on her arc? I've never really heard her discussed outside of Marquesas, so I'd be really interested to hear what you/others have to say about her second outing.

I viewed her jury speech in All Stars as the only relatable/understandable one. All the other bitterness felt over the top, but I saw Kathy's as a really heartfelt, endearing plea to someone about whom she really cared. Besides that, I thought her broken promise to Lex regarding her immunity necklace was awesome and helped cause Lex's well-earned downfall.

She was easily my favorite in Marquesas and I still thought she demonstrated good gameplay and a compelling narrative in All Stars.

Yeah, I'd assume that's the general consensus. Only because most people here say that very few contestants came out of AS looking better than they did in their original seasons (the few exceptions being the F3, Shii Ann, and maaaaybe Alicia).

Kathy’s All Stars jury speech is probably my favorite of all time. Her scene with Lex and the immunity necklace is probably pretty polarizing too though. That being said, that sequence is one of the most captivating moments of Survivor for me, I think Kathy’s arc in All Stars captures the potential that Survivor has to really get into the contestants heads. It’s tough to watch, but I feel for her there.

Sorry for late response but anyways I just found Kathy annoying in all stars. Especially in the episode where Jenn quit. To me she was acting like a total bitch to someone who’s mom was dying of cancer. Honestly it was like her redemption arc was for nothing 🙄
